Thanksgiving Eve November 23, 2022
Today’s Theme for Worship On Thanksgiving Day we think about the physical and spiritual blessings
God gives us. As we consider these many blessings, we can do nothing but thank
and praise our loving God for his mercy.
Hymn: 505 For the Beauty of the Earth
1 For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.
2 For the wonder of each hour
of the day and of the night;
hill and vale, and tree and flow’r,
sun and moon, and stars of light:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.
3 For the joy of ear and eye,
for the heart and mind’s delight,
for the mystic harmony
linking sense to sound and sight:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.
4 For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth, and friends above;
for all gentle thoughts and mild:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.
5 For thyself, best gift divine,
to our world so freely giv’n;
for that great, great love of thine,
peace on earth and joy in heav’n:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.
Invocation
In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Confession
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
God is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father,
I am sinful by nature
and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions.
I have not loved you with my whole heart;
I have not loved others as I should.
I deserve your punishment both now and forever.
But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins
with his innocent suffering and death.
Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Absolution
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Lord, Have Mercy
In peace let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
Amen.
Glory to God in the Highest
Refrain: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Refrain
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. Refrain
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Amen. Refrain
Salutation
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Prayer of the Day:
Let us pray.
Almighty God, your mercies are new every morning, and you graciously provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits, and serve you in willing obedience all our days; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:18–22
18Then
King David went and sat before the Lord
and said:
Who
am I, Lord God? And what is my
house that you have brought me to this point? 19Yet this was a small
thing in your eyes, Lord God. You
have also spoken about the house of your servant for a long time into the
future. Is this the law for the man, Lord
God?
20What more can David say to you? You know
your servant, Lord God. 21Because
of your word and according to the plan of your heart, you have carried out this
great thing in order to make your servant aware of it.
22Therefore, you are great, Lord
God, because there is none like you. There is no God except you, in keeping
with everything we have heard with our ears.
Psalm of the Day Psalm 100
Refrain: Sing! Sing!
Lift ev’ry voice!
Sing to the Lord; O
sing, rejoice!
Let your songs ring
out! Lift ev’ry voice!
Let your songs ring
out! O sing, rejoice!
All people who on
earth do dwell,
Sing out your praise
with cheerful voice;
Be glad in God, whose
praise you tell,
Come, sing to God;
let all rejoice.
Refrain: Sing! Sing!
Lift ev’ry voice!
Sing to the Lord; O
sing, rejoice!
Let your songs ring
out! Lift ev’ry voice!
Let your songs ring
out! O sing, rejoice!
For God alone is the
Lord, indeed;
Without our aid God
did us make;
We are God’s flock,
we now may feed;
And for God’s sheep
God does us take.
Refrain: Sing! Sing!
Lift ev’ry voice!
Sing to the Lord; O
sing, rejoice!
Let your songs ring
out! Lift ev’ry voice!
Let your songs ring
out! O sing, rejoice!
O enter then God’s
gates with praise:
Approach God’s courts
with shouts of joy;
Praise, laud, and
bless
God’s name always;
Let ev’ry voice God’s praise employ.
Refrain: Sing! Sing!
Lift ev’ry voice!
Sing to the Lord; O
sing, rejoice!
Let your songs ring
out! Lift ev’ry voice!
Let your songs ring
out! O sing, rejoice!
Make known the truth
that God is good;
Whose mercy is
forever sure,
Whose truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to
age endure.
Refrain: Sing! Sing!
Lift ev’ry voice!
Sing to the Lord; O
sing, rejoice!
Let your songs ring
out! Lift ev’ry voice!
Let your songs ring
out! O sing, rejoice!
Second Reading: Philippians 4:4–9
4Rejoice
in the Lord always! I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your
gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do
not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace
of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your
minds in Christ Jesus.
8Finally, brothers, whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is commendable, if anything is excellent, and if anything is
praiseworthy, think about these things. 9The things that you
learned, received, heard, and saw in me: Keep doing these things. And the God
of peace will be with you.
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Give
thanks to the Lord, for he is
good. His love endures forever.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Luke 7:36–50
36A
certain one of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him. Jesus entered the
Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37Just then a sinful
woman from that town learned that he was reclining in the Pharisee’s house. She
brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38stood behind him near his
feet weeping, and began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she began to wipe
them with her hair while also kissing his feet and anointing them with the
perfume. 39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw
this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would realize who is
touching him and what kind of woman she is, because she is a sinner.”
40Jesus
answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
He said, “Teacher, say it.”
41“A
certain moneylender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the
other fifty. 42When they could not pay, he
forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?”
43Simon
answered, “I suppose the one who had the larger debt forgiven.”
Then he told him, “You have judged correctly.” 44Turning
toward the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your
house, but you did not give me water for my feet. Yet she has wet my feet with
her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a
kiss, but she, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You
did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfume. 47Therefore
I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that is why she loved so much.
But the one who is forgiven little loves little.” 48Then Jesus said
to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”
49Those
reclining at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this who
even forgives sins?”
50He said
to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Sermon
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the
Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the
Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.
Children’s Choir The Blessing
Hymn: 597 Now Thank We All Our God
1 Now thank we all our God
with hearts and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom his world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love
and still is ours today.
2 Oh, may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
with ever-joyful hearts
and blessèd
peace to cheer us
and keep us in his grace
and guide us when perplexed
and free us from all ills
in this world and the next.
3 All praise
and thanks to God
the Father now be given,
the Son, and him who reigns
with them in highest heaven,
the one eternal God,
whom earth and heav’n
adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.
