Palm Sunday                                                                       March 28, 2021

Today’s Theme for Worship: Jesus humbly and willingly rides on to suffer and die for us.

Opening Hymn: 131 All Glory, Laud and Honor

1  All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the King of Israel And David’s royal Son,

Now in the Lord’s name coming, Our King and blessed one.

2  All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.

The company of angels Is praising you on high,

And we with all creation In chorus make reply.

3  All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.

The people of the Hebrews With palms before you went;

Our praise and prayer and anthems Before you we present.

4  All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.

To you before your passion They sang their hymns of praise;

To you, now high exalted, Our melody we raise.

5  All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.

As you received their praises, Accept the prayers we bring,

O Source of ev’ry blessing, Our good and gracious King.

Text: Theodulph of Orleans, c. 762-821; tr. John M. Neale, 1818-66, alt.

P: The grace of our Lord + Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

Confession of Sins

P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Oh Taste And See

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Bless-ed are they who take re-fuge in him.

Your Word, O Lord, is e-ter-nal;

it stands firm in the heav-ens.

Your faith-ful-ness con-tin-ues for-ev-er.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Bless-ed are they who take re-fuge in him.

Prayer of the Day

P: Let us Pray.

We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  C: Amen.

First Lesson: Zechariah 9:9-10

Zechariah tells the people of their coming Savior-King, who would appear in lowliness and humility to set up his kingdom of peace to the very “ends of the earth.”

9Rejoice greatly, Daughter of Zion!

Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!

Look! Your King is coming to you.

He is righteous and brings salvation.

He is humble and is riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim

and the horse from Jerusalem.

The battle bow will be taken away,

and he will proclaim peace to the nations.

His kingdom will extend from sea to sea,

from the River to the ends of the earth.

Psalm of the Day – Psalm 24

Refrain

Let the Lord enter; he is the King of glory.

The earth is the LORD’S, and everything in it,*

the world, and all who live in it;

for he founded it upon the seas*

and established it upon the waters.

Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?*

Who may stand in his holy place?

He who has clean hands and a pure heart,*

he will receive blessing from God his Savior.

Refrain

Let the Lord enter; he is the King of glory.

Lift up your heads, O you gates;

be lifted up, you ancient doors,*

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?*

The LORD strong and mighty,

the LORD mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O you gates;

lift them up, you ancient doors,*

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is he, this King of glory?*

The LORD Almighty-he is the King of glory.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain

Let the Lord enter; he is the King of glory.

Second Lesson: Philippians 2:5-11
Christ Jesus lowered himself and became a servant as he performed his redemptive work..

5Indeed, let this attitude be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. 6Though he was by nature God, he did not consider equality with God as a prize to be displayed, 7but he emptied himself by taking the nature of a servant. When he was born in human likeness, and his appearance was like that of any other man, 8he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. 9Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Verse
M: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Gospel: Mark 11:1-10

Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey.

As they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2and told them, “Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it, and he will send it back here without delay.’”

4They left and found a colt on the street, tied at a door; and they untied it. 5Some who were standing there asked them, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6The disciples answered them just as Jesus had instructed them, and the men let them go.

7They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their garments on it, and Jesus sat on it. 8Many people spread their garments on the road. Others spread branches that they had cut from the fields. 9Those who went in front and those who followed were crying out,

Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!

Hosanna in the highest!

C:  Praise be to you, O Christ!

Hymn of the Day: 133 Ride On, Ride On in Majesty

1  Ride on, ride on in majesty!

Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry.

O Savior meek, pursue your road,

With palms and scattered garments strowed.

2  Ride on, ride on in majesty!

In lowly pomp ride on to die.

O Christ, your triumphs now begin

O’er captive death and conquered sin.

3  Ride on, ride on in majesty!

The angel armies of the sky

Look down with sad and wond’ring eyes

To see th’ approaching sacrifice.

4  Ride on, ride on in majesty!

Your last and fiercest strife is nigh.

The Father on his sapphire throne

Awaits his own anointed Son.

5  Ride on, ride on in majesty!

In lowly pomp ride on to die.

Bow your meek head to mortal pain,

Then take, O Christ, your power and reign.

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: 217 vv. 1,2, 4&6 The Head that Once Was Crowned

1  The head that once was crowned with thorns Is crowned with glory now;

A royal diadem adorns The mighty victor’s brow.

2  The highest place that heav’n affords Is his, is his by right,

The King of kings and Lord of lords And heav’n’s eternal light,

4  To them the cross, with all its shame, With all its grace, is giv’n;

Their name, an everlasting name; Their joy, the joy of heav’n.

6  The cross he bore is life and health, Though shame and death to him;

His people’s hope, his people’s wealth, Their everlasting theme.

Text: Thomas Kelly, 1769-1855.

C:  A-men.

P: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  A-men, A-men, A-men

Closing Hymn: 344 vv. 1,3,4&5 At the Name of Jesus

1  At the name of Jesus Ev’ry knee shall bow,

Ev’ry tongue confess him King of glory now;

’Tis the Father’s pleasure We should call him Lord,

Who from the beginning Was the mighty Word.

3  Humbled for a season To receive a name

From the lips of sinners Unto whom he came,

Faithfully he bore it Spotless to the last,

Brought it back victorious When from death he passed;

4  Bore it up triumphant With its human light,

Through all ranks of creatures To the central height,

To the throne of Godhead, To the Father’s breast,

Filled it with the glory Of that perfect rest.

5  In your hearts enthrone him; There let him subdue

All that is not holy, All that is not true.

Crown him as your captain In temptation’s hour;

Let his will enfold you In its light and pow’r.
