Third Sunday after the Epiphany                                      January 24, 2021

Today’s Theme for Worship: God’s Word is powerful. It makes changes in the hearts and lives of those who hear it.

Hymn: 452 Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus

1  Let us ever walk with Jesus, Follow his example pure,

Flee the world which would deceive us And to sin our souls allure.

Ever in his footsteps treading, Body here, yet soul above,

Full of faith and hope and love, Let us do the Father’s bidding.

Faithful Lord, abide with me. Savior, lead; I follow thee.

2  Let us suffer here with Jesus, To his image e’er conform;

Heaven’s glory soon will please us, Sunshine follow on the storm.

Though we sow in tears of sorrow, We shall reap in heav’nly joy,

And the fears that now annoy Shall be laughter on the morrow.

Christ, I suffer here with thee; There, oh, share thy joy with me.

3  Let us also die with Jesus. His death from the second death,

From our soul’s destruction, frees us, Quickens us with life’s glad breath.

Let us mortify, while living, Flesh and blood and die to sin,

And the grave that shuts us in Shall but prove the gate to heaven.

Jesus, here I die to thee, There to live eternally.

4  Let us gladly live with Jesus; Since he’s risen from the dead,

Death and grave must soon release us. Jesus, thou art now our head.

We are truly thine own members; Where thou livest, there live we.

Take and own us constantly, Faithful Friend, as thy dear brethren.

Jesus, here I live to thee, Also there eternally.

Confession and Absolution (p. 3)

P: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

Stanza 1

O Jesus, Lamb of God, you are

My comfort and my guiding star;

I come, a sinner, trustingly

And bring my many sins with me.

C: O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.  I am bowed down and brought very low; I groan in anguish of heart. I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. O Lord, do not forsake me; be not far from me. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior. (selected verses from Psalm 38)

Stanza 2

O Lord, my sin indeed is great;

I groan beneath the dreadful weight.

Be merciful to me I pray;

Take guilt and punishment away.

SILENT CONFESSION

Stanza 3

Saint John the Baptist points to you

And bids me cast my sin on you,

For you have left your throne on high

To suffer for the world and die.

P: Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. In Jesus you have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. (Ephesians 2:4-5 & 1:7)

C: We have been brought from death to life. Sin shall not be our master, because we are not under law, but under grace. (Romans 6:13-14)

Stanza 4

Help me to change my ways, O Lord,

And gladly to obey your Word.

While here I live, abide with me,

Then take me home eternally.

Psalm 63 (p. 6)

Refrain (congregation sings)

In the morning I will sing,

I will sing glad songs to you,

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

O God, you are my God;

for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting.

My body pines for you like a dry,

weary land without water.

So I gaze on you in the sanctuary

to see your strength and your glory

Refrain (congregation sings)

In the morning I will sing,

I will sing glad songs to you,

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

For your love is better than life,

my lips will speak your praise.

So I will bless you all my life, in your name

I will lift up my hands.

My soul shall be filled as with a banquet,

my mouth shall praise you with joy.

Refrain (congregation sings)

In the morning I will sing,

I will sing glad songs to you,

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

On my bed I remember you.

On you I muse through the night,

for you have been my help;

in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.

My soul clings to you;

your right hand holds me fast.

Refrain

In the morning I will sing,

I will sing glad songs to you,

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

I will sing glad songs of praise to you.

Lessons

First Lesson Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The LORD calls Jonah to preach the message of repentance to the people of Nineveh.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Get up. Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”

So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh just as the word of the Lord had commanded. Now Nineveh was a great city to God. It required a three-day walk. Jonah walked through the city for a day, and he called out, “Forty more days and Nineveh is going to be overthrown!”

The men of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least.

10 When God saw their actions, that they had turned from their evil way, God relented from the disaster which he said he would bring on them, and he did not carry it out.

Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

God calls on believers to realize that this world is temporary and to live their lives accordingly.

29 I also say this, brothers: The time is short. From now on, let those who have wives live as if they have none; 30 those who weep, as if not weeping; those who rejoice, as if not rejoicing; those who buy, as if not possessing; 31 and those who use the world, as if not getting any use out of it. For the way of life that belongs to this world is passing away.

Gospel Lesson Mark 1:14-20
Jesus calls Simon and Andrew to be “fishers of men.

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom[a] of God. 15 “The time is fulfilled,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near! Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

16 As Jesus was going along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 Going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately Jesus called them. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Seasonal Response

P: We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Hymn of the Day: 85 O God from God, O Light from Light

1  O God from God, O Light from Light, O Prince of Peace and King of kings,

To you in heaven’s glory bright The song of praise forever rings.

To him who sits upon the throne, The Lamb once slain but raised again,

Be all the glory he has won, All thanks and praise! Amen, Amen.

2  Deep in the prophets’ sacred page, Grand in the poets’ winged word,

Slowly, in type, from age to age The nations saw their coming Lord;

Till through the deep Judean night Rang out the song, “Good will to men!”

Sung by heav’n’s hosts in splendor bright, Re-echoed now, “Good will!” Amen.

3  That life of truth, those deeds of love, That death of pain mid hate and scorn-

These all are past, and now above He reigns, our King once crowned with thorn.

Lift up your heads, O mighty gates! So sang the angel hosts again.

Lift up your heads-your King awaits. We lift them up, Amen, Amen.

4  Sing to the Lord a mighty song; Sing to his name, his glories tell!

Sing, heav’nly hosts, your praise prolong, And all on earth, your anthem swell!

Worthy the Lamb for sinners slain! Forever let the song ascend!

Worthy the Lamb enthroned to reign; Glory and pow’r! Amen, Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Prayer of the Church

Hymn 542 Dear Lord, To Your True Servants Give

1  Dear Lord, to your true servants give

The grace to you alone to live.

Set free from sin to serve you, Lord,

They go to share your living Word,

The gospel message to proclaim

That all may know your saving name.

2  They gladly go at your command

To spread your Word o’er sea and land.

Be with them, Lord, and make them strong

To heal sin’s ills, to right the wrong.

Your rule is over wind and wave,

And mighty is your arm to save.

3  When all their labor seems in vain,

Revive their sinking hopes again;

And when success crowns what they do,

Oh, keep them humble, Lord, and true

Until before your judgment seat

They lay their trophies at your feet.
