Seventh Sunday after Pentecost —
July 19, 2020
Today’s Theme for
Worship:
God promises to bring peace and rest after the struggles of this life.
Opening Hymn: 338 — I
Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
1 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto
me and rest;
Lay
down, O weary one, lay down Your head upon my breast.”
I
came to Jesus as I was, Weary and worn and sad;
I
found in him a resting place, And he has made me glad.
2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I
freely give
The
living water, thirsty one; Stoop down and drink and live.”
I
came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream;
My
thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live
in him.
3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this
dark world’s light.
Look
unto me; your morn shall rise And all your day be
bright.”
I
looked to Jesus, and I found In him my star, my sun;
And
in that light of life I’ll walk Till trav’ling days are done.
Text: Horatius Bonar, 1808-89.
P: In the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Confession of Sins
P: Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near
with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess
that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words,
and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I
deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my
sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a
sinner.
Lord Have Mercy
Kyrie
C: (sung) Lord, have mercy
on us, Christ, have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us.
P: God our heavenly Father, has been
merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our
sins. Therefore as a called servant of Christ and by
his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of
the Son ✙ and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Prayer and Praise
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us
praise the Lord.
♬ Glory Be to God
Glory be to God on high, and on earth
peace, good will toward men,
We praise you, we
bless you, we worship you,
we glorify you, we give thanks to you, for
you great glory,
O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father
almighty,
O Lord , the only
begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the
Father,
You take away the sin of the world; have
mercy on us.
You take away the sin of the world;
receive our prayer,
You sit at the right hand of God the
Father; have mercy on us.
For you only are holy; you only are the
Lord.
You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
are most high in the glory of God the
Father, Amen
Prayer of the Day
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also
with you.
P: Let us Pray.
P: God of all power and might, you are the
giver of all that is good. Help us to love you with all our heart, strengthen
us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care;
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: ♬ Amen.
FIRST LESSON: Exodus 33:12-23 - Moses had received
the promise from the LORD that an angel would continue to guide the Israelites
on the way to Canaan. The LORD reassures Moses: “My Presence will go with you
and I will give you rest.”
12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead
these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You
have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If
you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to
find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with
you, and I will give you rest.”
15 Then Moses said to
him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16
How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people
unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all
the other people on the face of the earth?”
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very
thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”
18 Then Moses said,
“Now show me your glory.”
19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my
goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have
mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have
compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one
may see me and live.”
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me
where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will
put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed
by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my
face must not be seen.”
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 145
Refrain
Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place
our trust in you.
Great is the LORD and most worthy
of praise;*
his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation will commend your works to another;*
they will tell of your mighty acts.
The LORD upholds all those who
fall*
and lifts up all
who are bowed down.
Refrain
Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place
our trust in you.
The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper
time.*
You open your hand
and satisfy the desires of every living
thing.
The LORD is near to all who call on
him,*
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desires of those who fear
him;*
he hears their cry and saves them.
Glory be to the Father and to the
Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will
be forever. Amen.
Refrain
Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place
our trust in you.

P: The Gospel for today is recorded in the
gospel according to St. Matthew, chapter 11.
C: ♬ Glory be to you,
O Lord!
GOSPEL: Matthew 11:25-30 - Jesus extends his
invitation, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give
you rest.” He even invites little children to bear the burden of discipleship.
25At that time,
Jesus continued, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have
hidden these things from clever and learned people and have revealed them to
little children. 26Yes, Father, because this was pleasing to you. 27Everything
has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wants to
reveal him.
28“Come to me all
you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my
yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
P: This is the gospel of our Lord.
C: ♬ Praise be to you,
O Christ!
Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the
Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down
from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human. For our
sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at
the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have
no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with
the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets. We believe in one holy
Christian and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and
the life of the world to come. Amen.
Hymn of the Day: 336 — Come unto Me, Ye Weary
1 “Come unto me, ye weary, And I will give
you rest.”
O blessed voice of Jesus, Which comes to hearts oppressed!
It tells of benediction, Of pardon, grace,
and peace,
Of joy that has no ending, Of love that cannot cease.
2 “Come unto me, ye wand’rers,
And I will give you light.”
O loving voice of Jesus, Which comes to cheer the night!
Our hearts were filled with sadness, And we had lost our way;
But thou hast brought us gladness And songs at break of day.
3 “Come unto me, ye fainting, And I will give
you life.”
O cheering voice of Jesus, Which comes to aid our strife!
The foe is stern and eager; The fight is
fierce and long;
But thou hast made us mighty And stronger than the strong.
4 “And whosoever cometh, I will not cast him
out.”
O patient love of Jesus, Which drives away our doubt,
Which, though we be unworthy Of love so great and free,
Invites us very sinners To
come, dear Lord, to thee!

Sermon Romans
7:15-25a
15For I do not
understand what I am doing, because I do not keep doing what I want. Instead, I
do what I hate. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that
the law is good. 17But now it is no longer I who am doing it, but it
is sin living in me. 18Indeed, I know that good does not live in me,
that is, in my sinful flesh. The desire to do good is present with me, but I am
not able to carry it out. 19So I fail to do the good I want to do.
Instead, the evil I do not want to do, that is what I keep doing. 20Now
if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who am doing it, but it is
sin living in me.
21So I find this law
at work: When I want to do good, evil is present with me. 22I
certainly delight in God’s law according to my inner self, 23but I see a different law at work in my members,
waging war against the law of my mind and taking me captive to the law of sin,
which is present in my members. 24What a miserable wretch I am! Who
will rescue me from this body of death? 25I thank God through Jesus
Christ our Lord!
Cre-ate in me a clean
heart, O God,
and re-new a right spir-it
with-in me.
Cast me not a-way from your pres-ence,
and take not your Ho-ly
Spir-it from me.
Re-store un-to me the joy of your sal-va-tion,
and up-hold me with your free Spir-it. A-men.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be
thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen

Words of Institution
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he
was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it
to his disciples, saying “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for
you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and
gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new
covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this,
whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
P: The peace of the Lord be with you
always.
C: ♬ A-men.
♬ O Christ, Lamb Of God
O Christ, Lamb of God,

Closing Hymn: 519 — O God of Love, O King of
Peace
1 O God of love, O King of peace,
Make wars throughout the world to cease;
Our greed and sinful wrath restrain-
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
2 Remember, Lord, your works of old,
The wonders that our elders told;
Remember not our sins’ dark stain-
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
3 Whom shall we trust but you, O Lord?
Where rest but on your faithful Word?
None ever called on you in vain-
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
4 Where saints and angels dwell above,
All hearts are knit in holy love;
Oh, bind us in that heav'nly
chain-
Give peace, O God, give peace again.
