Fifth Sunday after Pentecost -July 5, 2020

Today’s Theme for Worship: Doing God’s work of proclaiming his message is not easy. Sometimes people who are unwilling to hear that message cause us trouble. God still expects faithfulness, and promises to support us in his work.

Order of Service: Service of Word and Sacrament

Opening Hymn: 472  Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray

1  Rise, my soul, to watch and pray; From your sleep awaken!

Be not by the evil day Unawares o’ertaken.

For the foe, Well we know,

Is a harvest reaping While the saints are sleeping.

2  Watch! Let not the wicked world With its lies defeat you

Lest with bold deceptions hurled It betray and cheat you.

Watch and see Lest there be

Faithless friends to charm you Who but seek to harm you.

3  Watch against yourself, my soul, Lest with grace you trifle;

Let not self your thoughts control Nor God’s mercy stifle.

Pride and sin Lurk within,

All your hopes to shatter; Heed not when they flatter.

4  But while watching also pray To the Lord unceasing.

God protects you day by day, Strength and faith increasing,

So that still Mind and will

Shall unite to serve him And forever love him.

Order of Service: Service of Word and Sacrament

P: The grace of our Lord + Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

Confession of Sins

P: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions.  I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good.  For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.  But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray:  Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Lord, Have Mercy

P: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mer-cy.

P: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mer-cy.

P: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mer-cy.

P: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in your tender care:

C: A-men.

P: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise.

O Lord, Our Lord

O Lord, our Lord, how glo-rious is your name in all the earth.

Al-might-y God, mer-ci-ful Father,

you crown our life with your love.

You take a-way our sin; you com-fort our spir-it;

you make us pure and ho-ly in your sight.

You did not spare your on-ly Son, but gave him up for us all.

O Lord, our Lord, how glo-rious is your name in all the earth.

O Son of God, e-ter-nal Word of the Fa-ther,

you came to live with us;

you made your Fa-ther known;

you washed us from our sins in your own blood.

You are the King of glo-ry; you are the Lord!

O Lord, our Lord, how glo-rious is your name in all the earth.

Prayer of the Day

P: Let us Pray.

O Lord, our God, govern the nations on earth and direct the affairs of this world that your Church may worship you in peace and joy; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: A-men.

First Lesson: Jeremiah 20:7-13

Jeremiah is under attack because he proclaims God’s judgment on the people. Jeremiah finally realizes that the LORD is with him. His enemies will not win.

7You persuaded me, Lord, and I agreed to it.

You are stronger than I am, and you won out.

I have become a laughingstock all day long,

and everyone mocking me.

8Whenever I speak, I cry out.

I cry out, “Violence and destruction!”

But the word of the Lord has brought scorn on me.

I am mocked all day long.

9If I say, “I will not mention him

or speak in his name anymore,”

then there is a burning fire in my heart,

shut up in my bones,

and I am weary of holding it in.

I cannot!

10I hear many whispering,

“Terror on every side!”

All my close friends,

    those who are watching for my fall, say,

    “Denounce him! Let’s denounce him,”

“Perhaps he can be pressured into making a mistake.

Then we will have the upper hand against him,

and we will take our revenge on him.”

11But the Lord is with me like a terrifying  warrior.

So my persecutors will stumble,

and they will not gain the upper hand.

They will be put shame completely,

because they not been successful.

Their eternal disgrace

will never be forgotten.

12Lord of Armies, you test the righteous,

You see the heart and the mind.

Let me see your vengeance on them,

for I have laid my case before you.

13Sing to the Lord!

Praise the Lord,

for he has delivered the life of the needy

   from the hand of the wicked.

Psalm 31

Refrain

Surely, it is God who saves me;

I will trust in him and not be afraid.

For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,

and he will be my Savior.

In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;*

deliver me in your righteousness.

Be my rock of refuge,*

a strong fortress to save me.

Into your hands I commit my spirit;*

redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.

Refrain

Surely, it is God who saves me;

I will trust in him and not be afraid.

For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,

and he will be my Savior.

My times are in your hands;*

save me in your unfailing love.

How great is your goodness,*

which you have stored up for those who fear you.

You heard my cry for mercy*

when I called to you for help.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain

Surely, it is God who saves me;

I will trust in him and not be afraid.

For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,

and he will be my Savior.

Gospel: Matthew 10:24-33

The world hates the faithful followers of God. Yet we fight the good fight of faith without fear. People can kill us, but they cannot take us with them to hell.

24“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor is a servant above his master. 25It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher and the servant like his master. If the master of the house was called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!

26“So do not be afraid of them, because there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known. 27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops. 28Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

29“Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without the knowledge and consent of your Father. 30And even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31So do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.

32“Everyone who confesses me before others, I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven. 33But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.”

P: This is the Gospel of Our Lord
C:
Praise be to you, O Christ!

Hymn of the Day: 188  Creator Spirit, by Whose Aid

1  Creator Spirit, by whose aid The world’s foundations first were laid,

Come, visit ev’ry humble mind; Come, pour your joys on humankind.

From sin and sorrow set us free; May we your living temples be.

2  O Source of light, our Counselor, The Father’s help to us assure.

Come down, as promised, with your fire, And hearts with heav’nly love inspire.

Your sacred, healing message bring To sanctify us when we sing.

3  Giver of grace, descend from high In answer to our earnest cry.

Help us eternal truths receive And practice all that we believe.

Give us your wisdom that we see The glory of the Trinity.

4  Immortal honor, endless fame, Attend th’ almighty Father’s name;

The Savior-Son be glorified, Who for all humankind has died;

And equal adoration rise To you, O Spirit, in the skies.

Sermon                                            Romans 5:12-15
12So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, so also death spread to all people because all sinned. 13For even before the law was given, sin was in the world. Now, sin is not charged to one’s account if there is no law, 14and yet death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those whose sin was not like the transgression of Adam, who is a pattern of the one who was to come.

15But the gracious gift is not like Adam’s trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of this one man, it is even more certain that God’s grace, and the gift given by the grace of the one man Jesus Christ, overflowed to the many!

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered death and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.  We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done

 on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who

trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom

 and the power and the glory

 forever and ever. Amen.

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: A-men.

Distribution Hymn: 419  If God Himself Be for Me

1  If God himself be for me, I may a host defy;

For when I pray, before me My foes, confounded, fly.

If Christ, my head and master, Befriend me from above,

What foe or what disaster Can drive me from his love?

2  This I believe, yea rather, Of this I make my boast,

That God is my dear Father, My friend who loves me most,

And that, whate’er betide me, My Savior is at hand

Through stormy seas to guide me And bring me safe to land.

3  I build on this foundation: That Jesus and his blood

Alone are my salvation, My true, eternal good.

Without him all that pleases Is valueless on earth;

The gifts I have from Jesus Alone have priceless worth.

4  He canceled my offenses, Delivered me from death;

He is the Lord who cleanses My soul from sin through faith.

In him I can be cheerful, Courageous on my way;

In him I am not fearful Of God’s great Judgment Day.

5  No sin can now condemn me Or set my hope aside.

Now hell no more can claim me; Its fury I deride.

No sentence now reproves me; No guilt destroys my peace,

For Christ, my Savior, loves me And shields me with his grace.

6  No danger, thirst, or hunger, No pain or poverty,

No earthly tyrant’s anger Shall ever vanquish me.

Though earth should break asunder, You are my Savior true;

No fire or sword or thunder Shall sever me from you.

7  My heart for joy is springing And can no more be sad,

’Tis full of joy and singing, Sees only sunshine glad.

The sun that cheers my spirit Is Jesus Christ, my King;

The heav’n I shall inherit Makes me rejoice and sing.

Closing Hymn: 570  O Christians, Haste

1  O Christians, haste, your mission high fulfilling,

To tell to all the world that God is light,

That he who made all nations is not willing

One soul should perish, lost in shades of night.

Refrain:

Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace,

Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

2  Behold how many thousands still are lying

Bound in the dreary prison-house of sin

With none to tell them of the Savior’s dying

Or of the life he died for them to win.

Refrain

Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace,

Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

3  Proclaim to ev’ry people, tongue, and nation

That God, in whom they live and move, is love;

Tell how he stooped to save his lost creation

And died on earth that they might live above.

Refrain

Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace,

Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

4  Send heralds forth to bear the message glorious;

Give of your wealth to speed them on their way;

Pour out your soul for them in prayer victorious;

O Christians, haste to bring the brighter day!

Refrain

Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace,

Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.
